Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu last year attended a secret summit in Aqaba that was also attended by former US Secretary of State John Kerry during which the senior US official presented his comprehensive regional peace plan, Haaretz reports.
The Haaretz report states that the plan addressed relations between Israel and the PA (Palestinian Authority) as well as with other Arab neighbors and the secret meeting was also attended by Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Netanyahu turned down the plan, explaining he would have difficulty obtaining sufficient coalition support. Haaretz adds that despite his rejection of the plan, it served as the basis to enter into coalition talks with opposition leader MK Yitzchak Herzog just two weeks later.
Haaretz adds that details about the summit emerged from conversations between Haaretz and former senior officials in the Obama administration who asked to remain anonymous. The Prime Minister’s Office refused to comment, Haaretz adds.
