Cheap gas has long been a benefit of living in New Jersey and the siren that lured drivers there from neighboring states.
But sadly, the days of cheap gas will come to an end Tuesday when a 23-cents-per-gallon state gas tax increase takes effect.
New Jersey currently has the second-lowest gas prices in the nation, behind only Alaska. And since the state has the highest property taxes in the U.S., Garden State residents have always seen the low fuel prices as a way to keep down the cost of living.
The low prices that have lured in out-of-state drivers also has provided an economic boon to gas station owners, especially during the summer months.
With the increase, New Jersey will have the country’s sixth highest gas tax.

Wow, so now they have the highest property taxes and the sixth highest gas taxes. That’s known as a double whammy!

To a Democrat, that is happily – more taxes mean more money to the government to spend, and by their definition, government spending on what the politicians (and their donors) favor is good, as opposed to consumers spending money on their pet projects.
To an Environmentalist, this is also good. “Gas” is an evil to them and the more it costs, the less oil will be pumped. People should be required to walk or bike just like they did in the good old days (when most people walked to work, lived in one room shacks and people demanded raising the minimum wage to ten cents an hour).

This doesn’t seem to make sense. Won’t the volume of gas sold in NJ plummet if people from neighboring states no longer go to NJ to fill up? Guarantee you that there won’t be long lines on the Palisades anymore……..
The gas is 45-65 cents cheaper than Monsey now. It will be 20-40 cents cheaper on Tuesday. Still a better deal.
1. Did the stone age end when they ran out of stones?
2. Doesn’t New Jersey prohibit self-service? If they lifted that prohibition it could make up for the new tax.

Non-kosher food? Haircuts? Prostate surgery? The gas tax sounds, well, sort of connected with what we’re trying to pay for. But I’m not that smart. Let’s here from you. (Ooops, “hear,” not “here,” but I’m not that smart.)
