New York City’s Rent Guidelines Board is deciding whether tenants in nearly a million regulated apartments will be digging deeper into their pockets.
The vote is scheduled for Monday evening.
Mayor Bill de Blasio campaigned for a rent freeze last year. But he said last week that a decision must be based on numbers.
According to The New York Times, the board’s research shows that more than a third of stabilized tenants are paying over half their income in rent.
On the flip side, the board’s research shows a 5.7 percent rise in operating costs this year. And landlords say those numbers don’t reflect all of their costs.
They’re seeking a 6 percent increase for a one-year lease and 9.5 percent for a two-year lease.

How about the mayor and the board take into account the rest of NYC which pays more in rent because they aren’t lucky enough to be the hereditary tenants of a rent controlled apartment.
