Gavaad Eida Chareidis HaGaon HaRav Yitzchok Tuvia Weiss Shlita has sent a letter to talmidim and avreichim imprisoned by the IDF for being deserters, giving them chizuk and praising their determination. He refers to the avreichim as “Shluchei Klall Yisrael”, adding they are “Making a Kiddush Hashem by being a shield preventing calamity” (????? ?’ ????? ??? ????? ???? ????????).
The free translation is a letter full of praise for them, the detainees, and then attacks the IDF and the lifestyle and ongoing efforts to pull bnei Torah from a beis medrash into military service, were so many R”L have lost the derech.
They are instructed to remain strong and steadfast in face of this difficult situation and as Shluchei Klall, and that chareidi Yiddishkheit will not become victim to their lifestyle R”L, which is far from the Torah way.
The Gavaad signed the badatz declaration personally and added “I am adding to the words of the members of the Badatz Shlita you blessed by HKBH for being MeKadesh Shem Shomayim B’Rabim.

It’s important to note what is NOT said in the letter. It does NOT imply any endorsement of the tactics of the Peleg demonstrators. That’s a far different matter from the issue in the letter (the willingness to be arrested).
They are not “deserters” they are draft resistors. Calling them “deserters” implies they are cowards who ran away from the army. They are conscientious objectors bravely open a very powerful militarized state.
They deserve to be in jail. It’s all to create problems within society. The facts are that since the founding of the Medinah, all a Yeshiva Bochur has to do is go and register and get an automatic deferment. That still exists. One Rav told them not to register, therefore, they are breaking the law. They have to be punished or everyone else will say, “why should we register? All the time they spend protesting over nothing shows that they aren’t really learning.
