Nachman Enchin, who is on trial for the murder of his 8-month-old daughter Fruma A”H has given his wife a get.
After the experts determined his is unfit to stand trial, his wife filed for divorce in the Jerusalem Rabbinical Court. The dayanim expedited the process, well-aware that in the tragic case, shalom bayis was not an option and no efforts were made to persuade the young couple to remain together.
According to reports in the mainstream press, Nachman remains admitted to a psychiatric hospital and the get was given last Thursday.
Reports do not address how a mentally incompetent person gave his wife a get.

Isn’t the halacha that a person who is psychiatric (shoitah) cannot give a “get” (as it would be ineffective)?

I guess it depends on if the medical incompetence is the same as hallachic incompetence.
Obviously this is a very sad situation and needed to be addressed as soon as possible. It is even more sad that people feel the need to add salt to the wounds of these people with foolish comments. Every member of this family is surely suffering through their own gehenom including the father/husband who snapped. It would be more appropriate to show some concern, gemilas chessed and even offer up some tehillim for all.

a shoteh in regards to a get is someone that if you give him something he will lose it, which doesn’t seem to be the case over here the guy couldn’t handle his stress it has no shaychis to if he will lose something given to him

yeh a shoteh cant give a get becuse he cant make a kinyen but when he got married he probely also had a bad kinyen.
It is very hard to qualify as a “shoteh.” The criteria are very exact, and the rabbis make every effort to rule that the person is able to give the get. There is no finagling involved, just very deep and thorough knowledge of the halachah.
As the saying goes, Ignorance is machmir, knowledge is maikel.
