NYC: Judge Refuses to Stop Thursday’s Term-Limits

court hammer3.jpgA state Supreme Court judge denied a request Wednesday from two City Council members to block the council from voting on Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s proposal to change the term-limits law so he can run for a third term.

Justice Jacqueline Silbermann effectively removed the only obstacle to tomorrow’s vote, which could clear the way for incumbent council members and Mayor Michael Bloomberg to seek a third term in office.

Justice Silbermann, who is the Chief Administrative judge of the State Supreme Court, was asked to issue a temporary restraining order (TRO) that would have enjoined the Council from conducting the vote.

Brooklyn council members Bill de Blasio and Letitia James had filed a petition earlier Wednesday asking the court to stop a vote scheduled Thursday that would increase the number of terms the mayor and council members may serve.

The two lawmakers asked the court to declare that the vote to allow a third term in office for its own members, as well as Bloomberg, would violate the city’s conflict of interest law.
