Late Friday afternoon, Rockland Chaverim were searching for a missing group of hikers in Harriman State Park.
With less than one hour to Shabbos, Chaverim had nearly two dozens trained hikers searching the trails and forest, trying to locate a father and his six children.
A Chaverim spokesperson told YWN that the group of seven went missing at around 3:00PM, and reached out at around 5:30PM to Chaverim that they are lost.
The father has cell service, and was in touch with the Chaverim command center which has been set up at the park. Unfortunately, the man had a “kosher phone” with no track-able GPS on it.
UPDATE: The group was found at around 8:15PM Friday night. They were in good health.

should’ve learned shulchan aruch about how long before shabbos you’re allowed to be traveling. should’ve learned from every normal person in the world about how long not to wait after you go missing to inform people that you’re lost.

1) ??? ??? ?????? – “unFORTUNATEly” is a very poor choice of words.
2) I hope this was not some writer’s/editor’s way of criticizing our leaders’ advice (and that of so many educators’ and psychologists’) to limit or avoid our use of so-called ‘smart phones’.
Glad they were found but why do these people insist on taking risks when they lack basic skills to navigate?

Was 911 called?
Many kosher phones have a GPS chip and calling 911 would allow police to activate E911 Phase 2. Then, the cell providers must give a GPS location of the call to the emergency provider using the E911 system.
And even if the phone did not contain a GPS chip, police can still acquire a rough location from the cell towers using triangulation.
