What would possess an NYPD Traffic Agent to write a parking summons to an ambulance?
That’s what everyone who sees these photos wants to know.
For those unaware, this Hatzolah Ambulance (“Midtown 1”), is parked every single day on this same street (47th Street) for decades. The ambulance serves the needs of the community who work in Midtown Manhattan.
The reason for the ticket was for parking in a “no standing zone”, something that is perfectly legal for this ambulance to do.

Incorrect. New York City Administrative Code 19-162.2 Parking permits for volunteer ambulance services are only valid for no parking zones. Not for no standing zones etc.
Is it permissible on a daily basis or on a temporary basis to park there. What does the code say?

OUTRAGES? more like quite messed up and should be worked out. Its only a $115 fine (which of course should not be paid). Outrages is if the truck gets towed… Please @ywn stop with your self righteous nonsense
Can you cite the relevant code that allows a ambulance to park in a no standing zone everyday when not on a call?
I need thre full story. Was the amubulance actively in the middle of an emergency call, was it a stop to pick up food, catch a minyan, deliver an injured person to a medical facility, parked there overnight, parked there for several days?? I really can?t opine without further details.
Since this is the first time it got a ticket after parking in that spot for many decades, I think we can excuse a one-time error as a mistake that can be rectified by the city dismissing it.
If the next time this happens is in a few decades from now, we can manage to work it out again.

The law ( NY Consolidated law 19-162.2 a.4.f ) states that a volunteer ambulance parking permit “shall not authorize the parking of a motor vehicle in a bus stop, a taxi-stand, within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, a fire zone, a driveway, a crosswalk, a no stopping zone, a NO STANDING ZONE, or any place the vehicle would be double parked “.
So, the ambulance was illegally parked. Loshenharah, prior good acts doesn’t justify current wrong acts.
As reb yidd already mentioned Traf Rul 4-08 only makes an exception for:
(7) Emergency ambulance service vehicles. The operator of an ambulance, as defined in
section 100-b of the Vehicle and Traffic Law, while awaiting an emergency call, may park at
meters, truck loading and unloading zones, and “NO PARKING” areas not specifically
designated for other vehicles. (i.e. authorized zones).
This is a VOLUNTARY ambulance, covered under the section that I cited, and is apparently subject to different, more restrictive, conditions
Now that many have looked up the exact parking rules and regulations, we are more equipped to understand the legalities to the situation. Like I asked before, if the ambulance was making an emergency call (and serving it’s intended noble purpose), then I’d be curious to know where an emergency vehicle is supposed to go during an emergency (I’m also talking about police and fire rescue vehicles)?
{On the flip side}We don’t know the details, but Google Earth reveals that there are several kosher eateries on that block. God Forbid and OUTRAGEOUS if Hatzolah parked there for a meal! It troubling that the emergency lights appeared to be off on the ambulance if there were a medical emergency response (benefit of the doubt that pictures don’t reveal the whole story).
