YWN regrets to inform you of the Petira of HaRav Yosef Weiss ZATZAL, who served as a Rosh Yeshiva at RIETS [Yeshiva University] for more than 60 years. He was 95-years-old.
HaRav Weiss led the Semicha program at YU for decades, and was a leading Posek for the Jews in the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
The Levaya was held in Shomrei Hadas Chapels on SUnday afternoon

Last year, there was an Elul day of fulltime learning in the yeshiva, and Rav Weiss Zatzal visited the new building for the first time. They said how he received his Semichah from Rav Moshe Soloveitchik and taught in the yeshiva for 75(!) years.

He was still teaching Yoreh Deah last year.
My first year in the Yeshiva I was an avel davening for the amud. R’ Yosef Weiss zt”l always made it a point to come over to me and thank me for davening for the amud. Even though I didn’t know who he was, he showed tremendous care and sensitivity to all. Y’hei zichro boruch.
He was an expert in all 4 chelkei Shulchan Aruch and teshuvos acharonim. He had a remarkable memory, and would still tell over things he remembered from his childhood in Nanas in Hungary. He was a tremendous medakdek bemitzvos, but in a gentle way not to inconvenience others. He was a beautiful baal tefila with sweetness and nusach beyond compare. His wife is a daughter of the famed Dr. Raphael Moller, who was the president of KAJ in Washington Heights. He served as Rav of Congregation Moriah since 1966. Until the end he gave shiur every day, and still had minyan in his house Shabbos Chanuka!
