Petirah Of Hagaon Harav Aryeh Leib Baron ZATZAL

YWN regrets to inform you of the Petira of Rav Aryeh Leib Baron zt”l, one of the last remaining talmidim of the Mirrer Yeshiva in Shanghai. He was niftar at Shaarei Tzedek Hospital earlier today.

Rav Baron was 100 years old.

In addition to having learned at the Mirrer Yeshiva in Europe, Rav Baron was from the last talmidim of Rav Yeruchum Levovitz and Rav Elchonon Wasserman, having learned at the Baranovitch Yeshiva as well.

The levaya will be held tonight at 10:30 in front of Yeshivas Mir-Yerushalayim.

    Rabbi Baron took meticulous notes of Rabbi Elchonon Wasserman’s shiur .Later, it was those notes that were used for his sefer. Thank you for the link!!

    Many South African’s will fondly remember Rabbi Baron’s visits to the country, his warm manner and inspiring public talks. The very many SA “alte-litvak”s saw him as a link to the world which they left behind.

    R. Yerachmiel Begun of Miami Boys choir is a son-in-law. Rav yitzchok Schachner a dayan in Monsey is also, so is Rabbi Sternstein in South AFrica, and also Rabbi Nussbaum from South Africa who is now in Eretz Yisrael. His son is Rabbi Elchonon Baron who runs a kolel Ahavas Torah of Baranovich in Jerusalem and is also an expert on rare books and manuscripts.

    Another daughter is married to Mr Kaye, also used to live in South Africa. Rabbi G. Sternstein is long time principal of Yeshivas Toras Emmes High School in Johannesburg

    Rabbi Baron would always say that the thing that would bring him the most happiness would be for his grandchildren to “shlug up” the torah in his seforim…

    Rabbi Baron was always dignified, always had a presence when he entered a room. He stood straight and gave over his divrei torah with passion. “vayigbah libo b’darchei h-m.”

    Rav Baron was rosh yeshiva of Merkaz HaTorah in Montreal for over 60 years. He was mechaber many seforim including nesivos lev, yishrei lev, misamchei lev, birkas reuvain, birkas yehuda, yismach chaim, netzach yaakov, das yehudis and hagadas lev. Rav Baron was also very involved with gittin and specifically took the most difficult cases, relieving many agunos of their tzaar.
